India Women’s Cricket Team Wins World Cup for the First Time

Kathmandu – India has won the Women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup for the first time.

 

With outstanding all-round performances from Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in the final match held on Sunday.

 

This is India’s first-ever World Cup title in women’s cricket across both formats — ODI and T20 International.

 

Previously, India had lost in the finals of the 2017 ODI World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup, and had been stopped at the semifinal stage in the 2018 and 2023 T20 World Cups. After years of waiting, India finally turned its dream of becoming world champions into reality.

 

At the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India batted first after losing the toss and posted a total of 298 runs for 6 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

 

For India, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma both scored half-centuries. Shafali, along with Smriti Mandhana, shared a 104-run opening partnership.

Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh also contributed 34 runs.

 

In reply, South Africa was bowled out for 246 runs. Their captain and opener, Laura Wolvaardt, played a superb innings of 101 runs, staying at the crease until the seventh wicket, but couldn’t guide her team to their first-ever title.

 

Deepti Sharma was the star with the ball as well, taking five wickets. She sealed the victory for India by dismissing Wolvaardt with the first ball of the 42nd over, handing India a historic World Cup triumph.
