Kathmandu – Nepal has been eliminated from the 20th Asian Games currently underway in Japan after its men’s cricket quarterfinal against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain.
The quarterfinal match between Nepal and Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played today at Korogi Sports Park in Nagoya, could not begin because of continuous rainfall. According to the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), even the toss could not take place, and the match was subsequently called off.
As a result, Nepal’s hopes of reaching the semifinals have once again been left unfulfilled.
Under the tournament regulations, if a match cannot be played, the team ranked higher in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings is declared the winner and advances to the next round. Accordingly, Sri Lanka progressed to the semifinals while Nepal was eliminated.
In the latest T20I rankings, Sri Lanka are ranked ninth, while Nepal are 14th.
Nagoya has experienced continuous rainfall since Saturday. The weather also affected Nepal’s group-stage match against Japan on Saturday.
Nepal had defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in its opening group-stage match. However, after sharing points with Japan in the final group-stage match, Nepal advanced to the quarterfinals.
