Nepal placed in Group ‘C’ of the T20 World Cup

Kathmandu – Nepal has been placed in Group ‘C’ of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup Cricket. The World Cup will be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8. According to the group division and match schedule made public on Tuesday in Mumbai, India, Nepal has been placed in a tough group.

 

Group ‘C’, where Nepal is placed, includes two-time world champions West Indies, one-time champions England, Bangladesh, and Italy. For Nepal, Bangladesh and West Indies are familiar teams, while England and Italy are new opponents.

 

Nepal will be playing against both Italy and England for the first time. Nepal, which is playing the World Cup for the third time, had defeated West Indies 2–1 in a three-match series held last September in Sharjah, Dubai.

 

Nepal will be playing Bangladesh in the World Cup for the third consecutive time. Nepal had faced Bangladesh in the 2014 World Cup in Bangladesh, and also in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup held in the USA and West Indies. Nepal had lost both matches. Italy is playing in the World Cup for the first time. From the Europe Region Qualifiers, the Netherlands and Italy made it to the World Cup by surpassing Scotland.

 

A total of 20 teams have been divided into 4 groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the ‘Super Eight’. The Super Eight will also be divided into two groups, from which the top two teams of each group will reach the semifinals.

 

Nepal and England will play on February 8 (Nepali date: Magh 25) at 3 PM. Nepal will play Italy on February 12 (Magh 29) at 3 PM, and Nepal vs. West Indies will be on February 15 (Falgun 3) at 11 AM in Mumbai. Similarly, Nepal will play Bangladesh on February 17 (Falgun 5) at 7 PM in Mumbai.

 

Nepal qualified for the World Cup undefeated, winning the ICC T20 World Cup Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifier title.

 

Nepal defeated Samoa by 124 runs in the final, winning all matches from the group stage to the Super Six to become champions.

 

In the group stage, Nepal defeated Kuwait and Japan. Kuwait finished at the bottom and was eliminated. Carrying 2 points from the win against Japan into the Super Six, Nepal secured a thrilling 1-run victory against UAE in its first Super Six match.

 

After a 5-run win over Qatar in the second match, Nepal was almost certain to qualify for the World Cup. In the third Super Six match, Nepal defeated Oman by 38 runs, sealing both the title and the World Cup qualification.

 

Along with Nepal, UAE and Oman have also qualified for the T20 World Cup from the Asia and East Asia Pacific Qualifier.
