Bangladesh’s Batting Onslaught in Galle

In the first Test match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, which began today at the Galle International Stadium, Bangladesh showcased an outstanding batting performance on the first day. Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Bangladesh reached 292 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 90 overs by the end of the third session.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a brilliant century, scoring 136 runs off 257 balls, including 14 fours and 1 six, and remains at the crease. Similarly, experienced batsman Mushfiqur Rahim also played a century, scoring 104 runs off 185 balls with only 5 fours. The duo forged a record-breaking 185-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which is the highest fourth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in Test cricket.
For Sri Lanka, debutant bowler Tharindu Rathnayake took 2 wickets for 124 runs in 32 overs, including the wickets of Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque. Meanwhile, on Galle’s spin-friendly pitch, renowned spinner Prabath Jayasuriya bowled 28.2 overs, conceding 85 runs without taking a wicket.
In the first session, Bangladesh had scored 81 runs for the loss of 3 wickets, but the partnership between Shanto and Rahim turned the game entirely in Bangladesh’s favor during the second and third sessions. Currently, Bangladesh’s run rate stands at 3.25, and in the last 10 overs, they added 44 runs at a rate of 4.40 without losing a wicket.
This match is part of the 2025–27 World Test Championship cycle, and both teams are eager to start their campaign strongly. Sri Lanka’s captain Dhananjaya de Silva had expressed a preference to bat first at the toss, and the pitch also appeared to favor the batsmen on the first day.
