Kathmandu – The active cricket team previously known as Kathmandu Gurkhas has officially changed its name to “Kathmandu Gorkhas”. Along with the name change, the team has also updated its social media handles and revised its earlier announced plans accordingly.
Kathmandu Gorkhas will now represent Nepal on the international stage. The team has already signed a one-year agreement with the Nepal Cricket Department. In the initial phase, players from the UAE, Pokhara, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and Chitwan have been shortlisted. In addition, the team has stated that players from the Nepali diaspora will also be given opportunities.
According to team sources, after the initial selection, competitive matches will be organized across four districts, and players will be chosen based on their performance. The selection process will be conducted in a transparent manner, the team has assured.
Monty Desai Appointed Head Coach
The team’s training program will be led by Monty Desai, a highly experienced coach. Desai previously served as the head coach of the Nepal national cricket team from February 2023 for two years. During his tenure, Nepal won 11 out of 12 matches in the ICC World Cup League 2, securing a place in the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifiers. The team also achieved several major milestones under his guidance.
Under Desai’s leadership, the Kathmandu Gorkhas will soon begin formal training sessions. Team officials have stated that final team selection will be made based on recommendations from the coaching panel. Additional assistant coaches will also be appointed in due course.
