Kathmandu – England suffered a defeat against Sri Lanka despite Harry Brook smashing a record-breaking double century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket.
Sri Lanka chased down a target of 430 runs with two wickets to spare in Rawalpindi on Thursday, recording the second-highest successful run chase in ODI history and the highest-ever chase for Sri Lanka.
England posted a formidable 429 for four in their allotted 50 overs, powered by Brook’s magnificent 202-run innings. Brook reached his double century off just 114 balls, setting a record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket. However, his historic knock was not enough to secure victory for England.
Sri Lanka made a shaky start, losing two wickets for just 24 runs and coming under early pressure. Pavan Rathnayake steadied the innings with a brilliant 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka contributed 97 runs each.
Janith Liyanage then delivered a decisive finish, smashing an unbeaten 62 off just 27 balls to help Sri Lanka reach the target.
The highest successful run chase in ODI cricket remains South Africa’s pursuit of 436 runs against Australia in 2006.
Sri Lanka’s chase of 430 ranks second on the all-time list. A few weeks earlier, India had also chased down a target of 405 runs against the West Indies to register a major ODI victory.
