Nicholas Pooran Announces Retirement from International Cricket at 29
June 10, 2025Kathmandu – Explosive West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29.
Recognized as one of the best T20 batters in the world, Pooran was known for his aggressive batting style. Hailing from Trinidad, he represented the West Indies in 61 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 106 T20 Internationals (T20Is).
In ODIs, Pooran scored 1,983 runs in 61 matches, including three centuries and 11 half-centuries. In T20Is, he amassed 2,275 runs in 106 matches with 13 half-centuries.
Most recently, Pooran played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Lucknow Super Giants. He opted out of the T20 series against England, citing the need for rest. He is expected to feature in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA and The Hundred in the UK this summer.
His decision comes shortly after South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen also retired from international cricket to focus on franchise leagues.
Pooran last played a T20 international for West Indies against Bangladesh in December 2024. He has not featured in an ODI match since July 2023.
Notably, he holds the record for playing the most T20Is and scoring the most runs for West Indies in the format. Pooran’s early retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in West Indies cricket, as more players turn their focus toward the global franchise circuit.
