Asia Cup Controversy: India–Pakistan Trade Accusations After Final Clash

Kathmandu – Tensions have flared between India and Pakistan following India’s five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2025, with players from both sides exchanging sharp accusations in the aftermath.

Pakistan captain Salman Agha labeled India’s behavior as “disrespectful to the spirit of cricket,” while Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed disappointment, claiming that the champion team was “denied the trophy.”

In a controversial turn of events after the final in Dubai on Sunday, both teams once again refused to shake hands, echoing tensions seen during the third match of the series. The situation escalated further when the Indian team declined to accept the trophy from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman and Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi and skipped the official victory ceremony altogether.

Speaking to the media, Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav said,

“Since I started playing cricket, I’ve never seen a champion team being denied the trophy. We made a collective decision on the field. For me, the real trophy is my teammates and support staff back in the dressing room. Seeing ‘India – Asia Cup 2025 Champions’ on the big screen is enough honor for us.”

At the delayed presentation — held almost an hour after the match — commentator Simon Doull announced:

“The ACC has informed me that the Indian team has decided not to accept the award. With that, today’s presentation ceremony concludes.”

In response, Pakistan captain Salman Agha expressed deep dissatisfaction, stating:

“India’s conduct throughout the tournament was disappointing for cricket. If they think refusing to shake hands was disrespecting us, they were actually disrespecting the game itself. We accepted our medals in the true spirit of cricket.”

This year’s Asia Cup was seen as highly sensitive, coming shortly after a tense military standoff between the nuclear-armed neighbors. Political undertones and on-field aggression had already set a charged atmosphere during earlier matches.

Agha concluded,

“This is a first-of-its-kind incident. If this continues, I fear where the game might be heading. This is not good for cricket.”

The controversy has sparked widespread debate across the cricketing world, raising concerns about sportsmanship, political influence, and the future of India–Pakistan cricketing relations.
