Kathmandu – In a heartbreaking turn of events, the father of Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage, Mr. Surunga Wellalage, has reportedly passed away due to a heart attack while watching his son play in the ACC T20 Asia Cup match against Afghanistan.
According to international media reports, Surunga, aged 54, suffered the fatal cardiac arrest during the dramatic final over of Sri Lanka’s first innings, where Afghan batter Mohammad Nabi hit Dunith for five consecutive sixes. Though the official cause of death is yet to be confirmed, several reports indicate that the heart attack occurred while watching the tense moment live on television.
Sri Lankan media outlet Lankasara reported that Surunga experienced severe chest pain after witnessing his son being hit for multiple sixes. Despite being rushed to the hospital immediately, doctors were unable to save him.
Dunith was reportedly informed of his father’s death only after the conclusion of the match by the team captain, coach, and manager.
The tragic incident has cast a shadow over the tournament, with fans and players alike expressing their condolences and support for the grieving cricketer and his family.
