Kathmandu- The Afghanistan Cricket Board has reappointed former Ireland allrounder John Mooney as the national team’s fielding coach.
Additionally, Nirmalan Thanabalasingam has been appointed as the team’s new physiotherapist.
Both Mooney and Thanabalasingam have already joined Afghanistan’s ongoing training camp, which is being held in preparation for the T20I tri-series in the UAE (starting August 29, with Pakistan as the third team) and the Men’s T20 Asia Cup starting on September 9.
Mooney had previously served as Afghanistan’s fielding coach from 2018 to 2019, during which the team made its Test debut in India. He has also worked with the West Indies men’s team in 2019, and has been a temporary coach for the Ireland women’s team since January 2025.
After retiring from international cricket in 2015, Mooney completed Level 1, 2, and 3 coaching certificates from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
